English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) is a state-funded instructional program for eligible English Learners (ELs) in grades K-12 (Georgia School Law Code 1981, § 20-2-156, enacted in 1985). The Cherokee County ESOL program supports identified English learners with academic and social language development using the GaDOE standards-based curriculum and the WIDA Consortium English Language Development (ELD) standards.   Teachers differentiate assignments based on the student’s proficiency in English as determined by ACCESS 2.0.  ESOL and general education teachers use strategies to assist the students with language acquisition. Many teachers in the District have received training in Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP).
